I'm with Jumper on this one. Look in any dictionary and next to "hypocrisy" one will find just one entry: The Catholic Church.

For the people who believe and practice, fine. But don't start spouting off tolerance. His popeness and the boys are only "tolerant" when they need to cover the asses. Pedophile priests come to mind.

I wonder if a male Catholic school teacher would get fired for having a pregnant girlfriend?

The world would be a far better place without the Catholic church, and for that matter all religions.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Yup. For decades, the Church willfully shuffled molestors from parish to parish, allowing them to repeatedly commit their crimes. The Church doled out little or no punishment, kept it hush-hush, sometimes punishing the victim, and what's their modern day response? Ban gay priests.

Ain't that a hoot! Estimates are that up to half of today's priests are gay. Think there's a shortage now? HA!

All the Church is doing is paying lip service to the problems, shoving the gay thing back into the closet even further, while absolutely nothing changes.

Our Archbishop should do jail time.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">One of the issues I have with the treatment of this woman is that the school is dealing with the issue only because she is showing outward signs (pregnancy) of premarital sex. Does this school have a celibacy test for the rest of its faculty?

From my Catholic school days (grades 2 through 12), I remember a LOT of young, unmarried teachers. Catholic schools, as everyone knows, pay little and tend to have younger faculty.

So I want to know what the Church and this particular school are doing to monitor the behaviors of everyone else. Can anyone here truly believe the rest of the faculty remained virgins before they were married and that all unmarried faculty remain celibate?

With that said, it looks bad that a pregnant woman is being thrown out on her ass.

Don't get me wrong, being that I live in a neighborhood full of children raised without fathers, I'm hardly advocating single parenthood. But given the Church's position on abortion, I think it's problematic that she has taken the hard route by carrying the baby to birth and not secretly aborting him/her...only to lose her means of financial support...

    Hmmm....doesn't seem right.

It just seems to me that the school could have found an appropriate age-specific way of dealing with this issue without booting the teacher.

Hiding realities of life from children isn't always helpful.

Too bad I didn't know Gae and Jumper back in 1984, during my first year at St. X and my first exposure to Catholocism, and, after being around Southern Baptists so much growing up, I couldn't believe how TOLERANT and OPEN the Catholic church was to me!

With all due respect, Jumper, I see Lake's point. Lord knows the church has had it's share of corruption over the years. But that doesn't make it all bad.

As for the teacher at issue....the reason we discourage unwed pregnancies is because we want to encourage two-parent families. But, it's not like having a child out of wedlock is a bad thing or immoral or any of that (at least it shouldn't be viewed that way). I agree that some type of response was warranted, but not necessarily termination. Like I said, I struggle on this one. I think we can all agree that two-parent families should be encouraged, but not necessarily mandated. But if there are no consequences, then what is there to encourage the desired behavior? But then I think back to the crap my great aunt had to go through, and how my cousin turned out just fine. So I don't know...

This is a private school....they have the right to set their rules. From what I read, she signed a contract which included the guidelines of the Catholic teachings. Unless she is a modern day Virgin Mary....it is obvious she went against the
    pre-marital sex teachings.

It's not the point of whether or not these conditions area agreeable to anyone else but the parties involved. She agreed with the conditions of employment at the time. She acted against them.

BTW....I just have to wonder....if a teacher decided that he/she wanted to start their classtime with a prayer, while teaching in a public school....How long would it take for them to be fired? and would there be such an uproar over it?
